Mike
- Colum
Sands returns to Germany in October 2007 in a year when his performances bring
him from Australia to Israel and from Ireland to the
United States.
Following his first Australian tour last year, Colum was voted most
popular performer at the National Festival in Canberra and was also featured in
the annual broadcasting highlights
of 2006 by Australian Radio, ABC National.
He returned to Australia this year with appearances at major festivals including
the prestigious Port Fairy Festival.
Meanwhile back in Ireland, he continues to compile and present the
BBC programme Folkclub in the Belfast Studios of BBC Radio Ulster.
In an age when radio
is leaning more towards middle of the road and pop music, BBC Radio Ulster has
just announced that Colum’s programme is
now Radio Ulster’s most widely listened to broadcast on the world wide web -
an outstanding vote of confidence from folk music fans around the
world to his natural skills as a presenter and his choice of music.
Elswhere across the Atlantic ocean, Colum’s skills as a presenter and story
teller have just been recognized in another way by the prestigious Smithsonian
Institute in Washington DC.
At this year’s
Folklife Festival in early July, Colum will present musicians from all over
Northern Ireland on the main music stage of Washington’s National Mall at this
huge two week event which draws an audience of over two million visitors. The
Institute has also recognized the power of his songwriting and on an album
representing the best of folk and traditional music from Northern Ireland,
the Smithsonian Institute has featured one of Colum’s songs, “The Donegal
Road”, the opening track from his latest album “The Note That Lingers
On”.
